From Kanto to Code: Why I Built This
My journey started with a grey Game Boy and a cartridge of Pokemon Red. I was hooked immediately. While I hold a special place for Kanto, my heart truly belongs to Johto—Pokemon Silver is my all-time favourite game, and Tyranitar remains the king of my team to this day.
The idea for DexDeck was born at a Christmas party. A close friend confessed he didn't know
anything about Pokemon—he couldn't
tell a Pikachu from a Pichu. I wanted him to feel the same sense of adventure I feel. I searched
Google for a simple
"Pokemon Flash Cards" game to teach him the basics, but I couldn't find one that
felt right.
So, I decided to build it myself. It's a simple app, but it's also a fun one. I hope you find it
useful too!
DexDeck is a work of love, combining my passion for coding and my nostalgia for Pokémon.
Inspired by School Playtimes
The "Battle Mode" in this app isn't just a quiz game; it's a tribute to my childhood in the schoolyard. I used to spend every playtime battling with Top Trumps cards. That feeling of testing your knowledge against a friend is what I wanted to recreate here. It’s not just about memorising stats; it was about mastering the data.
A Family Adventure in London
Pokémon has grown from a childhood hobby into a family tradition. My wife and I are avid Pokémon Go players; we’ve spent countless days walking around London, catching Eevees and conquering Gyms, from Battersea to Richmond.
Now that we have a daughter, my hope is to pass this passion on to her. To us, Pokémon is more than just an IP. It represents adventure, the responsibility of caring for others (even digital pets!), and the spirit of never giving up on your dreams.
About the Developer: I have worked in the gaming industry for 20
years, but DexDeck is special—it’s the first game I’ve coded entirely by
myself!
It might not be the most complex engine in the world, but it’s made with love (and a lot of
coffee).
